Ear Wax Removal
Blocked ears are frustrating and uncomfortable. We offer professional wax removal at our Hawick clinic — safe, gentle, and effective. Most appointments take under 30 minutes.
How we remove ear wax
We use two safe, clinically proven methods — irrigation and micro-suction. After examining your ears, we'll choose the most appropriate approach for your situation. Both are comfortable and effective, and we'll talk you through what we're doing throughout.
Irrigation
A gentle flow of body-temperature water is directed into the ear canal to dislodge and flush out wax. Warm water irrigation is well tolerated and suitable for most patients.
Micro-suction
A small, low-pressure suction device removes wax under direct vision. No water is involved, and the audiologist can see exactly what they're doing throughout — making it very precise.
Signs you may have a wax blockage
- · Muffled or reduced hearing
- · A sensation of fullness in the ear
- · Ringing or buzzing (tinnitus)
- · Earache or discomfort
- · An itching sensation in the canal
- · Hearing aids whistling more than usual
What to expect at your appointment
Ear examination
We start with an otoscopic check of both ears to assess the amount and position of wax, and decide on the best removal approach.
Wax removal
Using the most appropriate method for your ears, we carefully remove the wax. Most people find the process entirely comfortable and notice an immediate improvement in their hearing.
Post-removal check
We re-examine your ears to confirm everything has been cleared and that your ear canals and eardrums look healthy.
Advice and aftercare
We'll let you know if any further treatment is needed and give you advice on keeping your ears healthy going forward.
