Airplane Ear

During the holiday seasons travelling abroad via airplane is very common and in some cases it’s the only way to travel to your destination.

If you are a frequent flyer, you have most likely experienced airplane ear.

During the take off and landing period you may have experienced a rapid change in pressure within your ears, and felt a discomforting feeling or ache. This feeling can be rather uncomfortable however there are some remedies to try on your next flight.

Remedies:

  • Avoid sleeping during the take off and landing.
  • If you suffer from hay fever or other allergies, take a decongestant an hour before take off.
  • Try to swallow, chew or move your jaw around during take off and landing, it can help to suck on a hard boiled sweety for this.

In most cases of airplane ear, it is temporary and does not cause much distress. However if you experience hearing loss beyond your flight, vertigo or dizziness or a persistent pain after your flight, you should seek help from a GP.
